Welcome
Compassion for the Disabled Uganda was founded by journalist Mugabi Gabriel to provide support and amplify the voices of persons with disabilities, driving meaningful change. We empower disabled individuals to share their stories, aspirations, and achievements in their own words — motivating their peers, inspiring hope, and challenging perceptions. Through this media-driven approach, we not only highlight the abilities and potential of persons with disabilities but also foster a culture of inclusion, empowerment, and positive transformation across communities.
-
Over 1.3 billion people worldwide live with some form of disability (about 16% of the global population). This means that nearly 1 in 6 people experience significant difficulties in functioning, making disability one of the world’s largest minority groups.
-
80% of persons with disabilities live in developing countries, where access to healthcare, education, and employment is often limited. Many live in poverty because disability support systems are weak or nonexistent.
-
Children with disabilities are more than twice as likely to never attend school compared to children without disabilities. This exclusion creates lifelong barriers, limiting opportunities for independence and employment.
-
Employment discrimination is still widespread — persons with disabilities are two to three times more likely to be unemployed. Even when employed, they often earn less than their peers and may work in insecure or informal jobs.
-
Disability is not just a health issue, but also a human rights issue. Many disabled people face stigma, social isolation, and lack of accessibility in public spaces. Despite this, their stories of resilience, creativity, and leadership continue to inspire movements for inclusion and equality worldwide.
